FORMIC ACID PRINCIPLES – REQUIREMENTS & THINNING – FORMULAS

UNDERSTANDING HOW FORMIC ACID WORKS

Many scientific papers have been written on Formic acid. There are just too many references to note all of them, but generally, all authorities agree on the following:

  • Mites should not become resistant to Formic acid.
  • Formic acid is the only treatment that can be used in organic honey production.
  • In temperate climates - spring and late summer treatments are recommended.
  • In sub tropical and other climates, dry and low-brood seasons are most effective when using Formic acid to treat against the Varroa mite.

SPECIFICATION OF FORMIC ACID
Standard industrial grade Formic acid in 85-90-95% concentration will require thinning to 65% according to Carrey Clark of the Research Institute of Dawson Creek, BC, Canada, who originated C-94 scheduling of the use of Formic acid in Canada. The 65% concentration is most effective and least harmful to the bees

There is no food grade of acid as many advertised treatments have claimed. It is just the same acid which is used in the food industry as a cleaning solvent for food processing machinery.

  5. fall treatment of Formic acid
  6. In addition to treating for the Varroa and Tracheal mites, there are many other positive side benefits to using Formic acid: It will get rid of Varroa and Tracheal mites carrying viruses, reduce Nosema and Chalkbrood, as well as the Lesser wax Moth. It will also help to increase the effectiveness of screen bottom boards and will possibly deter the small hive beetle from entering the hives.
